Starting Over

As 2009 draws to a close I look back over the little that was written here, the increase in numbers when I get on the bathroom scales and my complete lack of fitness and cringe. There have been reasons for the lack of effort, but it really boils down to the fact I just didn't get out there and do it.

2010 is shaping up as the year of my return. No more 5:00am starts to get kids to work on time. No more heading into town between 8:00pm and midnight to collect kids from work. One has left home, 2 are heading to Uni between Christmas and New Year, the last "young adult" gets his license on Dec 30th and the last 2 are still in Primary School. No excuse, but when your "work/parental duties" start at 5:00am and finish after 8:00 pm and you have to fit in time with younger children, partner and running the bookwork for a business as well as training, unfortunately training was left behind.

The family business has settled down. We have all new staff, but they appear to accept their positions as part of their career progression, not just a job. It's so wonderful to duck into the office at 5:30 and find staff still there working, rather than rushing out the door as soon as the second hand hits quitting time. They also get early afternoons if the work is all done. No sense hanging around doing nothing.

As always, my goals are big. Get back into condition and go hard at the Capricorn Half. The aim is to go around in 7 hours and qualify for IMOZ. Compared to 2007 I'm completely unfit. However, I now have better knowledge of what I should be doing and how to compete. I'm getting the body as best I can and then counting on the grey matter to get me the rest of the way.

Training has started. I'm slowly putting out 4k plods of 27 mins. I've managed 20 laps of the pool, although I'm sure that number will rapidly diminish when I move from the backyard pool to a 50metre one. I've not been astride a bike in almost 2 years. The bike will need a total overhaul just to get moving.
